Fresno TEA bagging

15 04 2009

There was a TEA party in Fresno today, at the SaveMart parking lot.  I drove past it as I was leaving campus.

I was on campus to get a TB skin test, which I need to work for any school district, by the way.

I don’t get why people are so against paying taxes.  If the government wants to take a few more dollars out of every paycheck to make things better, that’s great.

I don’t feel as though I’m taxed so heavily right now that a few more dollars is going to make a difference.  In fact, from what I’ve noticed, I generally get a hefty tax refund back every year.  I look forward to it.

The only tax that actually bothers me is the recent hike in cigarette prices.  Over $6 for a pack?  That’s crazy.

Paying an extra few bucks every now and then for the good of the nation?  That sounds like a good idea.

It seems as though the TEA parties were organized by conservatives to protest rising taxes.  The Right is SO American that they are rebelling against taxation, just like the Founding Fathers did back in the day.

Next thing you know they will be slaughtering Native Americans and buying African slaves just because they can.

I mean, fuck, man.  It’s just a few dollars.

It’s not like there is any sort of law that requires us to pay taxes.

Oh crap…never mind.

You are too ignorant to be American……..or too young to be able to have the proper perspective. Your opinion belies your stupidity. Smart? Maybe you are. Wise? Not until you have a lot more years on your life. It takes all of us, doesn’t it?

Well then, old timer, tell me what “takes all of us.” I’m perhaps to young and unwise to understand your question. It takes all of us to do what? Pay taxes? Have more years on my life? Pretend to give a crap about current events?

Hey, I’m taking a quick poll. When did you first get to Fresno, and what was your first impression?

MRoDT, conservatives are upset because they were betrayed by the GOP who lost sight of their “Contract with America” promises when spending went out of control under Bush and the Republicans. We went from tax and spend to borrow and spend and now to print and spend. It’s easy to say “it’s only a few more dollars” but that’s a slippery slope argument. At some point those “few more dollars” will be enough that you will care. What’s “good for the nation” is not something you always agree with. (For example, people who didn’t support the war in Iraq are paying for it.) Why give the government control of that money when you could use it to make your own life better? If we all use those extra few dollars to buy a delicious burger for ourselves, then we’re happier (and fatter, America!) and we have helped people who make burgers make a living. The only people who miss out under my plan are the people who depend on the government for their burgers.

You sound like you have an open mind, so I just submit two things to you:

The government loses track of billions of dollars a year, and they want to tell you that they need a few more dollars of your money.

The government likes to draw lines with various tax programs. For example, if you make over $100,000 a year you aren’t eligible for some tax credit or a stimulus check or whatever. If the government is allowed to draw lines, someday you’ll be on the wrong side of that line.

Have a happy new year!
